Joints that are recessed more than the brick
You can see a shadow line in the joint. That missing mortar is where wind driven rain enters.

Tuckpointing is the careful replacement of failed mortar joints. On a chimney it is usually called repointing. The goal is a joint that keeps water out and stays softer than the brick.

Joints fail before bricks do, which is what you want. These are the signs the joints are the job.
You can see a shadow line in the joint. That missing mortar is where wind driven rain enters.
The joint is leaving the chimney. Sweeping the crumbs up does not replace them.
Someone already tried a surface coat. If it is cracking in sheets, the next job has to cut back to sound mortar, not add another coat.
If the faces are intact and only the joints are soft, tuckpointing can be the whole repair. If the faces are popping, you need brick replacement too.
02
Tuckpointing is slow on purpose. The strength is in how deep the old mortar is removed.
A shallow scratch and a smear will fall out. Masons talk about a depth around twice the joint width, or until they reach sound mortar. Ask them to say which rule they are using.
Older Peoria brick is often soft. The mortar should be the part that gives, not the brick. A very hard cement mix can pop the faces off in the next freeze. This matters more here than on a new subdivision house.
The joint is filled in layers if it is deep, then tooled so water sheds off the face instead of sitting on a ledge.
Chimney tuckpointing is roof work. Scaffolding is common on two story houses. Angi lists scaffolding in a band of about $200 to $600 on tuckpointing jobs. That is a national note, not a Peoria invoice.
New joints under a cracked crown will be wet again by winter. The quote should say whether the crown is in or out.

Angi's 2026 tuckpointing guide puts a typical chimney project at $500 to $2,500, with an average of $1,200. It lists a Midwest range of $1,000 to $2,200, which is the band Peoria sits in geographically. It is still not a local bid.
The same publisher's repair guide lists repointing at $4 to $25 per square foot. HomeGuide lists $8 to $30 per square foot, or $500 to $2,500 for a chimney. This Old House also lists repointing at $500 to $2,500.
Square foot prices are easy to misuse. A chimney is a small area with a lot of setup. A low price per square foot plus a high minimum trip charge is a normal pattern. Ask for the job price, not only the rate.

Walk the West Bluff or the older streets north of downtown and you will see brick houses whose mortar has been repaired in several eras. The original joints were often a lime mix. Later patches are sometimes a hard gray cement. Those patches are the ones that pop the brick.
Freezing and thawing is the reason a joint that looks cosmetic in October is a leak in February. Peoria does not get a single hard winter and then a rest. It gets repeated cycles. That is why a surface smear fails here even when it looks tidy on the day it is done.
Peoria Heights chimneys take more wind. East Peoria chimneys nearer the river stay damp longer after rain. The same tuckpointing spec still applies: sound depth, softer mortar than the brick, and a crown that sheds water. The exposure is what changes.
We did not find a City of Peoria masonry contractor license on the trade license page. Electrical and heating contractors are listed. Ask Building Safety if your house is in a historic review area before the joints are cut, and verify any mason's insurance yourself.

In strict masonry language, tuckpointing can mean a two tone joint that makes the mortar line look thinner. On chimney bids in this region, people use the word for repointing. Ask the mason which one they are pricing. You want failed mortar cut out and replaced, not a decorative line drawn in the dust.
The weather side and the top courses are usually the worst, and you often cannot see them well from the yard. A partial repair is fair if the mason has been on the roof and marked the bad joints. It is a guess if nobody went up.
Only if the joints were the path. Flashing and the crown are the other common paths. If the ceiling stain is on the downhill side of the chimney, read the leak repair page before you buy a full repoint.
We are not going to invent a year count. Soft mortar on a wet, freezing chimney will not last as long as the same joint on a dry garden wall. The things that shorten the life are a cracked crown, a missing cap, and a mortar that is harder than the brick.
